How Do I Compare Solar Installers?

Obviously price is an important factor in assessing the various quotes you receive. But there are other factors to consider in selecting your vendor, as not everyone is created equal and many don't include all the costs while claiming to be full service.

Here are 10 pointers to get you started.

Tangible dimensions:

1. Have costs like structural engineering plans, building permits, ESA
consultation visits, grid connection fees, or system monitoring programs all been accounted for?

2. Has your installer included complete details of warranty programs and Ontario content compliance?

3. Will they assume resposibility for obtaining your Offer to Connect from your Hydro LDC?

4. Are they providing documentation on the level of workmanship warranties and liability coverages they carry?

4. Have they arranged or completed a structural analysis by a licenced engineer in order to obtain a building permit?

5. Do their installation crews carry recognized designations?

The Intangibles:

1. Is solar their core business, and the primary area they're focusing all of their energies on?

2. Do you feel confident in the
ability of your vendor to get the job done on time, and have they provided a work back schedule to monitor progress?

3. Are they open to some of your design suggestions, and do you feel they are recognizing your concerns by the way they're responding ?

4. Are they willing to freely share past customer references?

5. Are their submitted quotes binding, and have they been prepared in a professional thar instills confidence?

Once these questions are answered you should be ready to move forward with a contract.

Make sure however that no work is started until you've received your Offer to Connect from Hydro.

Good luck with your installation, and while we may have a little bias in terms of who you use, we know you've made a wise decision by going green.

OPA Pricing Review - Early Bird Gets the Worm

The Ontario Power Authority is reviewing prices being paid for renewable energy production, and for those who submitted their solar applications prior to August 31, 2011 this will be the last chance to receive the 80.2 cent rebates.

It is highly probable that current incentive levels will be reduced as sustainable energy systems take hold in the Ontario market, and being grand-fathered at the original rates is a once in a life time opportunity.

If you are at all serious about joining the sustainable energy trend it is advised that you select your solar provider soon and move forward with your system installation.

If you need help with determining system costs, expected sun hours in your area, MicroFIT payouts and returns on your investment Sunrise can certainly be of assistance.

Is Solar a Good Investment Tool?

Based on the 80.2 cent MicroFIT program solar out- performs most investment opportunities available today.

Solar will provide a 10% - 12 % rate of return or more, far exceeding GIC's, government bonds, and the open stock market (even the blue chips).

A Guide to Residential Solar Projects

  • The average home in Ontario is 2000 sq ft and uses about $1,245.00 of electricity per year at today's energy rates. The average solar system for this home is 15 panels, and with the 80.2 cent rooftop MicroFIT tarrif will generate approx $3,338 in revenue per year.

  • Most average home owners install a 2.5 kW to 3.0 kW system that comprise roughly 15 to 18 panels.

  • Each panel measures approx 40" x 66" in size, and can be installed in either landscape or portrait configurations.

  • Total system cost depends on size, roof type, mounting needs and site location.

Sunrise Actively Engaged with Social Housing Co-ops across Southern Ontario

Above: Sunrise install Summer 2011

A year ago The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing released project funding for a wide range of sustainable energy projects for Ontario co-op facilities.

Under the Renewable Energy Initiative (REI) these grants were tendered for solar generating systems to be grid-connected for the province's aggressive push towards alternative energy solutions.

Sunrise responded to many of these requests, and as an approved RET vendor were awarded many fo these projects across the Province. Almost all of them are now completed and are contributing vast amounts of energy to the grid that we are all now using.

For more information see Social Housing under our Products and Services section.

Sunrise Consumer Show Schedule

We'll be wrapping up our Fall show schedule with the Fall Cottage Show that takes place November 25 - 27 at the International Centre near the Toronto airport.

This will be an opportunistic time to chat about the benefits of the 80.2 cent incentive program for producing solar energy on your roof, as the OPA is currently reviewing the MicroFIT pricing schedule.

If you have your OPA application and have any questions about the next steps or how the process works please visit our booth. We can provide all the answers you'll need, and can prepare a no-cost, no-obligation proposal on-line to allow you to make an educated solar decision.

Now is the time to join others in the rewarding MicroFIT program for generating renewable energy.

Ontario's "World Class" MicroFIT Program ... Details at a Glance

For residential applications this Ontario initiated program is limited to systems under 10 kW. Contracts from the Ontario Power Authority cover a period of 20 years at a fixed rate of 80.2 cents /kW of energy produced. Applications are made on-line at www.powerauthority.on.ca.

For those who haven't filed their OPA application yet?

If you missed the August 31 cut-off to submit your MicroFIT application,
yet are still interested in persuing solar energy production, there is still some positive news on the horizon.

The Liberal Government is committed to green energy, and will undoubtably continue to support the renewable sector with profitable incentives.

Their goals are simple - replace lost jobs, attract foreign investment, and become sellers of sustainable energy on the world market, instead of buyers.

To accomplish this they will still need to support the MicroFIT program, and we should be able to count on a continuation of rewarding incentives for the production of solar energy.

The OPA has indicated they'll set the new prices early in 2012, but it is advisable that you get your application into them now, so you'll be at the head of the line when the new rates are published. There is no cost and no obligation, and therefore no risk.

Give us a call. We can outline in more detail the review process that is in place, and can provide assistance in getting your application submitted.

How Solar and MicroFIT Work?

Actually it's quite simple. Power generated from your rooftop travels to a second meter that Sunrise will install, where it is measured and recorded for the MicroFIT program. It then enters the original meter to be used either in the home if electricity is required or it travels to the grid for someone else to use.

Efficient. Responsible. And Finacially Rewarding.

MicroFIT systems must meet minimum requirements of 60% Ontario content to qualify for the FIT program.

Sunrise systems deliver 68% Ontario content.

FIT systems must also meet a minimum requirement of 60% Ontario content to qualify for grid connection.

Quick Solar Facts

- Every day, more energy hits the Earth from the sun than the entire human population uses in an entire year.

- Germany has the largest installed base of Solar Photovoltaic systems in the world.

- The Ontario Feed-In-Tariff Program went into effect on October 1st, 2009 providing significant incentives for property owners to install solar photovoltaic systems.

- Under the MicroFIT Program, residential projects under 10kW receive a conditional offer from the OPA that will be firmed up once the new energy system is hooked up to the local utility.
