Questions You Should Ask Your Installer

Finding the right installer can be a daunting task. Here are a few areas you should probe when assessing the right installer for your residential or commercial project:

• Does the company have experience installing small renewable energy projects in Ontario or other jurisdictions? Can they provide a list of past customers who would be willing to give you references?

• Are the installers qualified to install the project? Do they meet all necessary safety regulations, licensing and certification requirements?

• Does the company provide warranties on labour and products? And do they have sufficient liability coverage for property damage or injury?

• Does the company have any pending or active legal judgments outstanding?

• Will the company order all the required equipment for the project? What is the full cost of the total installation?

• What are the ongoing operating and maintenance costs that I can expect and who will be responsible for them?

• Will the company arrange for all necessary approvals and permits? This includes:

• - building permits

• - authorization to connect from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)

• - renewable energy approval, if required

• Will the company work with your local distribution company to arrange for system connection to the grid? This includes:

• - preparing the connection configuration diagrams

• - arranging for payment of the connection costs

• - helping prepare the connection agreement with the local distribution company

• - arranging for installation and testing of the new meter to be installed

• Are all the costs included in your proposed estimate?

• Will the company provide written confirmation of the domestic content level of the system, that is required by the microFIT Rules and Contract?
