Bolting in the racking mounts and clipping in the panels seems easy enough, but there a number of other needs, options and necessities that require your attention when it comes time to get your solar energy system installed.
Here are a few pointers for homeowners to get you thinking about what to discuss with your supplier:
Fig.1 - A second meter will need to be installed in order to read and measure the energy you produce on your roof. The local utility company will want to do the hook-up, and pre-scheduling their arrival will require some attention and fortitude. Once installed the new meter will be read at the same intervals as before, and your government paid incentive cheques will arrive at the same frequency as your hydro bills.
Also notice the disconnect switch in the box to the right of the two meters in the picture. Utility linemen will use this during any power outages, in order to cut off the electrical current coming from your roof so they can work safely on the transmission wires and junction boxes.
Fig.2 - Sunrise provides a real-time monitoring system when we install our systems. The EMU transmitter shown in the photo will relay production data to a personalized website that we'll set up for you. This system will also provide emergency email notices to both you and Sunrise should any system fail or any panel jeopordy arise.
Fig.3 - Metal flashings will be installed to shield each penetrating screw used to mount the panel racking, in order to eliminate water leakage. These flashings are free fitted underneath the overlapping shingle and are held in place with the screw they are protecting.
Fig.4 - Silicon gel will also be added as a secondary safety precaution to ensure protection from leaks.
Fig. 5 - Each panel is mounted approx 3" above the roof grade. This ensures an uninterupted snow run-off during the winter and early spring months. Both the narrowness of the gap and the constant water / snow run-off preclude the arrival of any small critters who may wish to make this their home.
Call us if you'd like to discuss any of the advantages associated with renewable energy production. We'd be glad to talk to you about design options, city permits and inspection requirements, the various brands available in panels and inverters, what kind of sun hours you can expect, payback periods and ROI returns, financing options if required - or the benefits of assigning the cost to your mortgage, the different techniques required for pitched and flat roof installations, workmanship and component warranties, and of course price.
